Sri Lanka Set Sights on SAFF Championship Glory After 31 Years

Sri Lanka Football is preparing for another historic chapter as the national team gears up for the 15th SAFF Championship, scheduled to take place from 21 September to 6 October 2026 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The island nation last lifted the prestigious regional trophy in 1995, when Sri Lanka defeated India 1-0 in the final at Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo to claim their first and only SAFF title.

FFSL President Jaswar Umar has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the national team in their mission to bring the championship back to Sri Lanka after more than three decades. Despite criticism and allegations directed towards the federation, Umar highlighted the progress made by the current administration, with the national side recording several international victories and climbing back up the FIFA World Rankings after years of struggle.

He also called on all football stakeholders, supporters, and fans to remain united during this important period for Sri Lankan football, as Sujan Perera and the squad continue their journey towards regional success.

With Bangladesh hosting the tournament and South Asia’s strongest nations expected to compete, Sri Lanka now hopes to create another unforgettable moment in SAFF Championship history.
